Mary Brough (1744-1804)

Mrs Mary (Brough) Stewart

She is usually referred to rather grandly as the heiress of Boghall, Perthshire, which contained a one-story dwelling house, offices, garden, and arable farm. After she was married, her husband bought Steelend which neighbored Boghall and they took up residence there in "a neat dwelling house" which was where their younger son, George Stewart, later retired to. Mary is the great-grandmother of the patron of the arts, Isabella Stewart Gardner, and her portrait hangs at the Gardner Museum in Boston.
