John Powell (1682-1742)

Secretary to the Governor of Massachusetts

He was born at Bankhouse (or Bank House), Shropshire. Being a younger son of the Powell family of Caer Howell/Caerhowel Hall, Montgomeryshire, he came out to Boston as Secretary to his future brother-in-law, William Dummer, the newly appointed Lieutenant-Governor of Massachusetts. His grandson described John as, "an adventurer of the Cavalier stock, a man of gayety and pleasure and from pure gaieté de coeur married my Grandmother, Anne Dummer". He lived with his son, Jeremiah, at North Yarmouth and after he died in 1742 at Canso Bay, Nova Scotia, Jeremiah, "took his eastern lands and lived at North Yarmouth". He was the father of three sons.
