John Powell (1716-1794)

Merchant, of Boston, Massachusetts

He was born at Boston, Massachusetts. He was a nephew of the Lieutenant-Governor, William Dummer, and both his brothers served as President of the Council. These connections ensured that for 30-years he held the extremely lucrative contract at Boston for victualling the Royal Navy. After the Revolution, he lived for a time in London with his four daughters before moving to his cousin's estate in Montgomeryshire, Caerhowel Hall. When that was sold, he moved to Ludlow on the English/Welsh border where Thomas Apthorp lived - another Loyalist from Boston.
