Jeremiah Dummer Powell (1720-1789)

J.P., of North Yarmouth; President of the Massachusetts House of Representatives

He was born at Boston and is named for his uncle Jeremiah Dummer. He lived with his father at North Yarmouth in Maine and after his father died in 1742 at Canso Bay, Nova Scotia, Jeremiah, "took his eastern lands and lived at North Yarmouth". He was appointed Justice of the Peace (1744); Lt.-Colonel under Colonel Samuel Waldo (1762); and, Judge of the Court of Common Pleas for Cumberland County (1763). In 1745, he was elected to the Massachusetts House of Representatives becoming a Council Member (1766-1783), President (1776-1779), and Senator (1780). He married Sarah, daughter of Edward Bromfield, whose sister married his brother, William Powell
