John Lyon Gardiner (1770-1816)

7th Proprietor of Gardiner's Island, New York

He graduated from Princeton (then Nassau Hall) and was a scholar and naturalist. He could speak the native Indian language and left a Montauk Indian dictionary. In 1803, he married Sarah Griswold, granddaughter of Matthew Griswold, Governor of Connecticut. They were the parents of five children (listed).
