Frances Shanks (b.1979)
Frances was born in Houston Texas to the Shanks and Brown family of Waco, Texas. She is the 6th woman following her maternal name to take the name Frances. Her father is a lawyer educated at the University of Texas at Austin. Many of the women in her family were debutantes educated at St. Mary's Hall in San Antonio, Texas while the men attended Philips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire. She is the fourth of many generations of women in her family to attend the University of Texas at Austin. Those who didn't attend Texas were educated at Cambridge.
Frances met Edward Longridge in 2003 in London and married him in Texas.
Her great great grandfather, William Lambin Prather (1848-1905), was president of the University of Texas at Austin and published the school's famous song, The Eyes of Texas are upon you. He was also the president of the state bar association for Texas. That branch of the Prathers are related to explorer and Govenor Mewiwether Lewis (1774-1809). The Prathers married into the Darden family (Frances' grandmother) who founded the Darden School Business at the University of Virginia (UVA). Her family originates from Virginia while some were from Rhode Island. She is a descendent of the Hazard family of Rhode Island, Oliver Hazard Perry being one of them. She is also related to the Woodward family of New York with members such as William Woodward Sr. Her grandfather was cousins with his son, William Woodward Jr who used to visit him in New York. It was William Woodward Jr. who was dining with Wallis Simpson before the terrible scandal in 1955. Some of Frances' relatives in the early twentieth century in New York, the Rodman family, were neighbors with the Jerome family (Sir Winston Churchill's mother's family).
Although her family were primarily of English descent, she has some Scottish roots. She is descended from not only the Kirkpatrick Clan but also the Stuart/Stewart family who were distant cousins with King James I of England and John Stuart, 3rd Earl Bute and Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
