Meriwether Lewis (1774-1809)
Leader of the Lewis and Clark Expedition & 2nd Governor of the Louisiana Territory
He took part in the famed Lewis & Clark Expedition of 1804–1806 from the Louisiana Purchase to the Pacific Ocean, the first major effort to explore and map much of what is now the Western United States and to assert American claims to the Pacific Northwest. He died unmarried.
