Richard Shanks (b.1947)
Lawyer
Richard Shanks was born in Dallas, Texas in 1947, after his parents moved there from Alabama and Georgia.
The Shanks family were landowners in eastern Alabama owning up to 5,000 acres of land. The Shanks were able to maintain much of their land after the civil war though were often in disputes with the govenor of Alabama and Georgia over their financial means. Many aristocratic southern families lost their land and inheritence after the civil war like Richard Shanks' mother's family, the Allen family of Georgia who owned Statley Oaks mansion. The Shanks sold their land around 1917 to what became an airbase. Richard's father, George, however, recieved little inheritence and was forced to make his own living, something that his family was not used to.
