Charles Gates Dawes (1865-1951)

30th Vice-President of the United States (1925-29) & U.S. Ambassador to the U.K.

He was born in Marietta, Ohio, and came to Chicago during the Panic of 1893, acquiring interests in several Midwestern gas plants. He became President of both the La Crosse Gas Light Company in La Crosse, Wisconsin, and the Northwestern Gas Light & Coke Company in Evanston, Illinois. He was Comptroller of the Currency (1898-1901) under Presidents McKinley and Roosevelt; President of the Central Trust Company, of Chicago; 1st Director of the Bureau of the Budget (1921-22) under President Harding; Vice-President of the United States (1925-29) under Calvin Coolidge; and, U.S. Ambassador to the United Kingdom (1929-1931). He was a co-recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1925 for his work on the Dawes Plan for World War I reparations.
