Thomas Hitchcock (1831-1910)

of 8 East 29th Street, New York City & Newport, R.I., Co-Owner of The New York Sun

He was born in New York City and graduated from the University of the City of New York and Harvard Law School. Having been a lawyer, from 1864 he moved into journalism. He became the secretary of - and one of the largest stockholders in - The New York Sun, serving on its editorial staff. He was widely known as The Sun's financial writer in the days of Charles A. Dana under the pen-name of "Matthew Marshall" (an early financier in England). His own financial acumen and investment advice in gas and street railroads, etc. saw him become a multi-millionaire. In 1855, he married Maria, daughter of Asa H. Center, Merchant, of New York, and had five children. He enjoyed literary work and music, and was a member of the Century Club.
