Hitchcock-Travers Villa

Narragansett Avenue, Newport, Rhode Island

Built in 1862, for the financial journalist Thomas Hitchcock (1831-1910), of New York City. It was designed by the celebrated Richard Morris Hunt (1827-1895) in the "stick-style" typical of the period while featuring a mansard roof and tower. By 1869, it had become the property of William Riggin Travers (1819-1887) who rehired Hunt and for next three years carried out significant extensions which included adding a ballroom. The Travers cottage was said to have contained furniture "of great value". On October 24, 1899, The New York Times reported that Mrs. Robert Garrett had purchased the Travers villa which was then regarded as one of the largest and best situated estates in Newport. She incorporated the villa into her new marble home, Whiteholme....
