Thomas Benyon (1800-1886)

Thomas Benyon, J.P., D.L., of Gledhow Hall, Leeds & Thorp Arch Hall, Tadcaster

He succeeded his father as the senior partner in Benyon & Co., flax spinners and linen, canvas and sailcloth manufacturers with 652-employees at their mills on Mill Street and Meadow Lane, Leeds. In 1835, after his marriage to Ann, daughter of the banker William Williams Brown, he purchased Gledhow Hall where they lived with their five children and 13-servants. In about the 1850s, his business failed and he sold Gledhow, moving to Thorp Arch Hall, near Tadcaster in North Yorkshire. In 1862, at Brenchley, Kent, he married Julia Alice Wraxall Waterhouse, formerly of Jamaica.
