Sarah (Griswold) Spencer (1827-1905)

Mrs. Sarah Johnson (Griswold) Spencer

She and her daughter, Eleanora, Princess di Vicavaro, paid 305,000 Swiss Francs for an estate on the sun-drenched "Dreilinden" (or "Drei Lindren") hill with its stunning views over the lake and Alps at Lucerne in Switzerland. Eleonora commissioned Edward Hewetson, the great English architect who specialized in the Gothic-Revival style, to build "Villa Vicavaro" (modelled on Vinland in Newport, Rhode Island, built in 1883 for Eleonora's notable cousin, Catharine Lorillard Wolfe) for her and her husband, and the smaller "Villa Griswolden" for her mother. Mrs. Spencer lived here for many years and died at her home in Paris, 70 Avenue Marceau. Her villa at Dreilinden was demolished in 2008.
