Samuel Jones Tilden (1814-1886)
of 15 Gramercy Park; 25th Governor of New York & Presidential Nominee in 1876
He was famous for (1) losing one of the most heavily disputed U.S. presidential elections in history to Rutherford Hayes in 1876, and (2) for his role as Governor of New York when he succeeded in breaking up the deeply corrupt Boss Tweed Ring. Despite his prominent position in society and considerable wealth, he never married. His home at 15 Gramercy Park (see images), N.Y.C., is now the National Arts Club.
