William Magear Tweed (1823-1878)

"Boss" Tweed, Grand Sachem of Tammany Hall & U.S. Congressman from New York

He purchased "Woodcliff" (see images) in 1869 as his country home off Fort Washington Avenue, but after the law caught up with him in 1871 and he fled to Europe his son sold it to the "Merchant Prince of America," A.T. Stewart.
