Samuel Hammond Russell (1823-1894)
of 135 Beacon Street, Boston & Nahant, Massachusetts
He was a merchant in Boston and managed the properties that he inherited from his maternal grandfather, Samuel Hammond, as well as his father-in-law. He was Treasurer (1847-76) and Director (1876-94) of the Bunker Hill Monument Association, a Member of the Boston City Council, co-founder of the Bostonian Society, and a Member of the New England Historical Society. In 1847, he married Louisa, daughter of Benjamin Adams, becoming brother-in-law to Dr. Edward B. Everett and Robert Charles Winthrop. They were the parents of two daughters, the eldest of whom, Edith, married Lord Playfair. They lived at 99 Boylston Street in Boston before moving to 135 Beacon Street which he built in 1859 with 137 Beacon Street (for his aunt, Catherine Hammond Gibson) which is identical to his own and is now the Gibson House Museum.
