Nathaniel Pope Russell (1779-1848)

of 72 Beacon Street, Boston & Rose Cottage, Nahant, Massachusetts

He was a merchant in the China Trade at Boston; Massachusetts State Legislator (1822); State Senator (1826-27); and Treasurer of the Bunker Hill Monument Association. He specialized in marine insurance for trading companies and became the assistant to Peter Chardon Brooks. Through their association he too made a fortune. He was married twice. He had six children by his first wife and three by his second (listed). In Boston, he lived at 34 and 72 Beacon Street but apparently retired to Nahant with his younger wife. According to legend, he suffered from severe depression and eventually took his own life by jumping from a pier near his home in Nahant.
