Robert Walter Rutherfurd (1788-1852)
of "Tranquility" Hackettstown; Member of the New Jersey State Legislature
He was born in Essex County, New Jersey. After graduating from the College of New Jersey (Princeton University) in 1806, and travelled in Scotland and England. On his return, he served in the New Jersey Assembly (1810-1815) and on the State Council (1819-1820). In 1809, he married his cousin, Sabina, daughter of Col. Lewis Morris, of Charleston. They had five children (listed) and lived at "Tranquility" that later became known as the Stuyvesant Mansion. In 1821, Sabina was committed to an insane asylum. She was later released but she and Robert separated. He retained custody of their children who appeared to live with their grandfather, Sen. John Rutherfurd.
