John Rutherfurd (1760-1840)

of "Edgerston" Bergen Co., U.S. Senator from New Jersey

He was born in New York City and graduated from the College of New Jersey (Princeton University) in 1779. He was admitted to the bar and practiced as a lawyer in New York from 1784 before moving to "Tranquility" (later known as the Stuyvesant Mansion) near Hackettstown, New Jersey - a wedding gift from his father-in-law in 1787. He was a Presidential Elector (1788), a Member of the New Jersey General Assembly, and U.S. Senator from New Jersey (1791-98). He was President of the Board of Proprietors of East Jersey (1804-1840) and was appointed by the New York legislature as Commissioner to lay out the City of New York north of Fourteenth Street between 1807 and 1811. In 1816, he was appointed by the New Jersey legislature as Commissioner to determine the route and cost of a canal to connect the Delaware and Raritan Rivers, and between 1826 and 1833 he served as a Commissioner to determine the boundary lines between the States of New Jersey and New York, and New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

In 1782, he married Helena, daughter of U.S. Founding Father, Sen. Lewis Morris, 3rd Lord of Morrisania. They had 6-children. He died at his home, "Edgerston," (named for the Rutherfurd family seat in Scotland), a large estate on the banks of the Passaic River in New Jersey to which he moved in 1808. He was the largest landowner in Sussex Co.
