Maj. Walter Rutherfurd (1723-1804)

British Officer, Import Merchant & Landowner, of New York City & New Jersey

He came to America in 1756 as a Captain in the British Army, having seen much service both in the army and the navy. At the surrender of Montreal, the keys were delivered to him and he served as Paymaster and Judge-Advocate, first with the rank of Captain and then as a Major. He resigned his commission in the British Army soon after his marriage to Catherine, daughter of James Alexander, then the Surveyor-General of New Jersey, through whom he acquired land in New York and New Jersey.
