Robert Livingston Cutting, Sr. (1812-1887)
President of the New York Stock Exchange
He was born in New York City and graduated from Columbia College. He purchased a seat on the New York Stock Exchange in 1844 and later served as President. He co-founded the Continental Bank of New York and was a director of the Westchester & Putnam Railroad Company. He retired in 1881 - selling his seat for $27,000 - and was succeeded by his sons James and Robert Jr., while remaining affiliated with the firm of Lee & Warren. He joined the Union Club in 1852 and was a lifelong supporter of the Academy of Music in which he was a large stockholder. He married Julianna DeWolf of Bristol, Rhode Island, a niece of William Henry DeWolf of Linden Place. They were the parents of four children and he died at his home, 141 Fifth Avenue.
