Oliver Thomas Beard (1832-1898)

Lt.-Col. Oliver Thomas Beard, Attorney, of New York City

He was the son of a successful Irish immigrant to Brooklyn. In the Civil War, he was Lieutenant-Colonel of the 48th New York Regiment and he is credited with commanding the first body of colored troops engaged in battle.
