She had enjoyed a privileged life in the highest circles of Gilded Age society until her husband lost his fortune and died. In 1912, she left for England at the invitation her first cousin, Mrs. Gertrude Griffiths, who lived there with her wealthy English husband. Marian and her four children moved in with he Griffiths.
