Louisa (Jarvis) Nanton (1831-1906)

Mrs Louisa (Jarvis) Nanton

She was brought up in Toronto and went to Finishing School in Paris. Her husband was educated in England at Eton and Oxford before coming out to Canada as a partner in the legal firm of Sir Alexander Tilloch Galt. Over the years, her husband became an hopeless alcoholic and died at an early age leaving Louisa with five young children and heavy debts. She survived by teaching French and taking charity from her sister, Mrs Meredith, and their family friend, Sir Casimir Gzowski. Her eldest son, Sir Augustus Meredith Nanton, prospered and paid for the educations of his younger siblings.
