Lewis Stuyvesant Chanler, Jr (1891-1963)
President of Société Générale in New York & President of the Knickerbocker Club
He was known as "Stuyve" Chanler and was educated at Eton in England before graduating from Harvard in the Class of 1914. During World War I, he served as a Major in the 321st Field Artillery of the 82nd Division. After the war, he represented several New York banks in London (England), including the Guaranty Trust Company, the International Acceptance Bank, and the Bank of the Manhattan Company of which he was Vice President. Returning to New York, he was appointed President of the New York agency of Société Générale. In 1949, he succeeded Lucius Wilmerding as President of the Knickerbocker Club in New York City and on retiring in 1960 he was succeeded by Moorhead C. Kennedy. He was a Senior Warden of the historic Protestant Episcopal Church of St. Mark's-in-the-Bowery and in addition to the Knickerbocker, he belonged to the Century Association, the St. Nicholas Society, the Down Town Club and the Pilgrims. He lived between 59 East 92nd Street, N.Y.C., and his estate on River Road in Rhinebeck, Dutchess Co., N.Y. He was married twice and had 4-children by his first wife.
