John Richmond Jaffray (1785-1870)

Dry Goods Merchant of 28 Eaton Square, London & 5 Old Slip, New York

He was born in Scotland at Kinross, north of Edinburgh. He came to London as a young man where under his own name he established a profitable trading business with America which by 1838 had become a major transatlantic corporation. His success allowed him to buy a home at 28 Eaton Square, London. In England, the company was known as John R. Jaffray but it was known in the States as Robert Jaffray & Co. His son, Edward, joined the company and ran it from New York with equal success until his death in 1892 and in 1895 Robert Jaffray & Co. was liquidated.
