John Richards (1768-1835)

Merchant, of Chestnut Street, Boston, Massachusetts

He was born at North House in Hambledon, Hampshire. He came to America in 1798 to look after the business interests of the Baring Brothers, accompanying Alexander Baring who married Ann Bingham of Philadelphia - the future Lord and Lady Ashburton. At first he was resident in Washington County, Maine, before going into business on his own account in Boston. He lived at No. 2 or No. 4 Chestnut Street, "in one of the two houses with looped chains on the stone steps". In 1800, he married Susan Coffin Jones, daughter of Judge Stephen Jones, of Machias, Maine. The Richards' returned to London in 1830 and John died five years later. His widow and their children remained there and moved to Cadlington House near Hornbeam in Hampshire.
