Maj. John James Redpath (1834-1884)

"Jack" Redpath, of Sherbrooke Street, Montreal; Co-Founder of the Victoria Rifles

He was briefly a partner in the Redpath Sugar Refinery but instead chose to pursue a military career. He helped found the Victoria Rifles of which he became a Major. In 1870, he commissioned John James Browne to build his mansion (see images) at 1065 Sherbrooke Street on the corner of Redpath Street on land that was previously acquired by his father. He married Ada, daughter of John Easton Mills, Mayor of Montreal, and through her mother she was a niece of Henry Lyman of "Thornhill" on McTavish Street. They were the parents of five children. Tragically, his widow and their youngest son were both shot dead at the family home in 1901: the story remains a mystery but it looks as if their son shot his mother in a fit of rage before shooting himself.
