John Izard Middleton (1800-1877)

John Izard Middleton, Signer of the South Carolina Ordinance of Secession

He is not to be confused with his well-known uncle, Izard Middleton (1785-1849). He graduated from Princeton University and was appointed Secretary to U.S. Legation at St. Petersburg, Russia, under his later who was the U.S. Minister to Russia. Returning to America in about 1830, he became a successful rice planter on the Waccamaw River near Georgetown, South Carolina. In opposition to his father's beliefs, he and his brother, Williams, supported the Confederacy and voted for South Carolina to be removed from the Union.
