John Burstall (1832-1896)

John Burstall, Timber Merchant, of Quebec

He was born at Lysdon House in Hessle, East Yorkshire. He went in to the timber export and shipbuilding business with his uncles Henry and Edward Burstall at Quebec before setting up on his own account in 1862 with Henry Stanley Smith, a native of Liverpool, focusing on export and storage but leaving shipbuilding. He married Fanny, daughter of The Hon. James Bell Forsyth M.P., and they lived at Elm Grove, Sillery, bought from his uncle Edward when it was leased to Madame la Marquise de Bassano.
