John Brown Francis (1791-1864)

Senator John Brown Francis, 13th Governor of Rhode Island

He was born in Philadelphia and educated in Providence, Rhode Island. He graduated from Brown University, co-founded by his grandfather, John Brown. He was a member of the Rhode Island House of Representatives (1821-1829); a member of the Board of Trustees of Brown University (1828-1857); Chancellor of Brown University (1841-1854); a member of the Rhode Island Senate; the 13th Governor of Rhode Island (1833-1838); and, U.S. Senator from Rhode Island (1844-1845). He retired from public life in 1856 and engaged in agricultural pursuits until his death at Spring Green Farm in Warwick, Rhode Island. He was married twice and had seven children.
