John Francis (1763-1796)

Merchant, of Philadelphia and Providence

He was born to one of Philadelphia's foremost families. By 1787, he had moved to Providence in Rhode Island where five years later he formed a business partnership (Brown & Francis) with his influential father-in-law, John Brown (1736-1803), Co-Founder of Brown University. Brown & Francis was the first Providence firm to trade in the East Indies and China. He was married in 1788 and had two children.
