Spring Green Farm

600 Spring Green Road, Warwick, Rhode Island

Built from 1782, for John Brown (1736-1803), co-founder of Brown University, and his wife Sarah Smith (1738-1825). It passed to their grandson, John Brown Francis, 13th Governor of Rhode Island, who on retiring from public life settled down to farming here, where he died in 1864. His son, John, also lived here and it was still owned by the Brown family when in 1938 the farm was developed into a leafy neighborhood of 800-homes called "Governor Francis Farms" or locally as "The Farms"....

It was Rhode Island’s largest suburban single-family housing development, landscaped by Prellwitz & Graham who'd trained under Frederick Law Olmsted Jr. Special care was taken to preserve the trees. Gaspee Point has several smaller cottages on leased lots by the water, still owned by J. B. Francis' descendant and Warwick's historian, Henry A.L. Brown. Mr Brown continues to make his home at Spring Green Farm.
