James Homer Maxwell (1756-1827)

of New York City & Westchester Co., N.Y.

He was as an intimate friend of George Washington and the son of William Maxwell, a native of Scotland who became President of the Bank of New York and one of the founders of the Chamber of Commerce. In 1787, he married Catherine, daughter of Jacobus Van Zandt, Surgeon in the Continental Army. She was an eye witness of the Battle of Monmouth and one of the leading belles at the Republican Court, opening the Inauguration Ball as George Washington's dancing partner.
