His wife and "beautiful" daughter, Catherine, fled to Morristown, New Jersey, during the British occupation of New York, and Catherine was an eye witness of the Battle of Monmouth. Catherine was also one of the leading belles of her day and had the honor of opening the Inauguration Ball as the dancing partner of George Washington. In 1788, she married William Homer Maxwell.
