Hugh McGillis (1767-1848)

Fur Trader & Partner in the North West Company; retired to Williamstown, Ontario

He entered the service of the North West Company as a clerk in 1790, and under Simon McTavish was made a partner in 1801. He was arrested by Lord Selkirk following the Seven Oaks Massacre in 1816, but was acquitted at a trial in York, Upper Canada. In 1819, he paid £4,000 for the house and estate built by Sir John Johnson at Williamstown in 1784. He had a native wife and seven children by her, but they were not included in his will and he left all his property to his nephew, John McGillis
