John McGillis (1805-1897)

Lawyer, of St. Johns, Quebec & Williamstown, Ontario

He was heir to his uncle Hugh McGillis, one of the partners in the North West Company, who bought Sir John Johnson's house (pictured) in Williamstown, Ontario, where John lived after his uncle's death in 1848, up until he sold the property in 1872. He added the two story addition on the eastern side of the house, and built the barns for livestock. He continued to look after the two mills and managed to increase operation during his time there, having most likely upgraded the mill equipment.
