Donald McGillis (d.1801)
of New Johnstown, Upper Canada; Sergeant in the King's Royal Regiment of New York
He and his wife started their lives in Munerigie in Glengarry, Inverness-Shire. Most likely as a result of the Highland Clearances, they left Scotland for America in 1773, leasing 100-acres from Sir William Johnson in the Mohawk Valley in Tryon County, New York, in the vicinity of present-day Johnstown. On the outbreak of Revolution in 1776, their land was taken by the rebels and Donald and his sons enlisted with their landlord's regiment, the King's Royal Regiment of New York. He served until the end of the war when he was discharged with the rank of Sergeant. He was granted land for his military service in New Johnstown, Upper Canada, where he died.
