Sir William Johnson (1715-1774)

Major-General Sir William Johnson, 1st Bt., of Johnstown, New York

He was born in County Meath, Ireland, and came to America with his uncle, Admiral Sir Peter Warren. Becoming fluent in Iroquois, he commanded Iroquois and Colonial Troops during the French & Indian War and was subsequently appointed British Superintendent of Indian Affairs for the Northern Colonies from 1756 until his death in 1774. He was created a Baronet for his role in the British victory at the Battle of Lake George, 1755, and was succeeded by his son, Sir John Johnson, of Montreal.
