Hartland MacDougall Paterson (1898-1963)

Lieut. H.M. Paterson, M.C., of Montreal

He was born in Montreal and was educated at Lower Canada College. In 1916, he entered the Royal Military College, Kingston, and joined the Royal Field Artillery the following year. He was severely wounded in action at the Canal du Nord in 1918, losing his leg, for which he was was awarded the M.C. for bravery. After the War, he became associated with the Phoenix Assurance Company Ltd. of London, but lost his savings in the Wall Street Crash and in the 1930s moved into his mother's home on Simpson Street, Montreal. Taking a loan from their brothers-in-law, he and his brother, Alex, continued their father's stockbroking firm. After the loan was repaid, he retired the following year in 1956. He was the father of a son and a daughter.
