Harry Stikeman (1852-1916)

General Manager of the Bank of British North America, Montreal

He was born in England at the village of Lee near Lewisham, Kent. He was educated at Uppingham School in Rutland before joining the Bank of British North America in 1869. He came out to Canada in 1872 and worked in several of the bank's branches in Ontario before holding senior positions in New York, Quebec and London (U.K.). In 1894, he was appointed the bank's General Manager at its headquarters in Montreal. He was also Chairman of the London & Lancashire Life Assurance Co., Montreal; Member of the Executive Council of the Canadian Banker's Association; and, a Council Member of the Montreal Board of Trade. He was Governor and President of the Montreal General Hospital, President of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and on the Executive Committee of the St. John's Ambulance Association.

He was a co-founder of the Mount Royal Club and belonged to the Forest & Stream, Royal Montreal Golf, Royal St. Lawrence Yacht, and the Montreal Curling clubs. In New York, he was a member of the Union Club and the Down Town Association, and in London he was a member of the Canada Club. In 1879, he married Esther, daughter of Francis Heward of Toronto. They lived at 949 Dorchester Street, Montreal, and had two children (listed).
