Gertrude (Gouverneur) Kemble (1759-1806)

Mrs Gertrude (Gouverneur) Kemble

She was considered to have been - according to the word of Garrit Storm - "the most splendid woman of her day". But, when her husband's considerable fortune was cut by two thirds in 1800, "it proved too much for the high mind of Mrs. Kemble, and she became partially deranged, which was soon succeeded by death".
