George Henry Warren (1855-1943)
of 924 Fifth Avenue, New York City & "Seafield" Newport, R.I.
He was born in Troy, New York. He was a great-grandson of Stephen Warren, one of only five millionaires in New York in 1830, and among his brothers-in-law he counted Robert Goelet and William Starr Miller. He graduated in law from Columbia University but purchased a seat on the New York Stock Exchange, briefly going into partnership with Thomas Fortune Ryan in the firm of Lee, Ryan & Warren. He later went into real estate and founded the Metropolitan Opera & Real Estate Company that owned the Metropolitan Opera when located at 1411 Broadway. He was a Director of the United New Jersey Railroad & Canal Company and the Metropolitan Trust Company.
In 1887, he was named as one the "Patriarchs" and he was a member of the Metropolitan and Union clubs. In 1927, he and his brother, Whitney Warren, received just over $2.3-million each after the death of their uncle, Lloyd Phoenix. In 1885, he married Georgia (known as "Daisy"), daughter of Charles Phelps Williams, of Stonington, Connecticut, and they were the parents of two children. The family home in New York was at 28 East 64th Street up until circa 1903 when Warren commissioned his brother's architectural firm, Warren & Wetmore, to build their new mansion at 924 Fifth Avenue (pictured) that was completed in 1905. Their summer home in Newport, "Seafield" (see images) still stands at 662 Bellevue Avenue but has since been renamed "Ocean View". Their daughter, Constance, married a great-great-grandson of the Marquis de Lafayette, and for a period she and her husband lived at Lafayette's historic old chateau, Chateau de la Grange.
