Edward Henry Green (1821-1902)

Merchant and Partner in Russell Sturgis & Co., retired to Bellows Falls, Vermont

He was born at Bellows Falls, Vermont, and was a direct descendant of Joseph Green, of Boston. He began his career aged eighteen as a clerk in the great mercantile house of Russell Sturgis & Co., New York, and was sent to the Philippines where he made money rapidly. In a few years, he was admitted to partnership until he was the firm's last survivor. For a long time, he was engaged in business at Hong Kong and amassed "a good-sized fortune". After he retired between his homes in New York and at Bellows Falls he could be found daily in the Union League Club, passing much of his time among books of which he was extremely fond. In 1867, he married the infamous Hetty Green, dubbed "The Witch of Wall Street" and who accrued a fortune in excess of $100-million. They were survived by two children (listed above).
