Col. Edmund Quincy II (1628-1698)

J.P., of Braintree, Massachusetts

He was born at Achurch in Northamptonshire, England. His parents emigrated to America in 1633 and his father was granted land at Braintree (Quincy). He was appointed Justice of the Peace; Representative from Braintree at the General Court; Colonel of the Suffolk Militia; and, a Member of the Council of Safety during the Great Boston Revolt of 1689. After the death of his first wife (the sister of Leonard Hoar, President of Harvard College), in 1686 he built what is now known as the Dorothy Q. Homestead. The town of Braintree was later renamed 'Quincy' in honor of his grandson, John Quincy. He was married twice and had fifteen children of whom ten (listed) lived to adulthood - eight by his first wife, two by his second (daughter of Major-General Gookin).
