Col. Charles Carroll V (1801-1862)

of Doughoregan Manor, Maryland

He was educated at Mount St. Mary's College in Emmitsburg, Maryland, until 1817 when his grandfather, Charles Carroll, sent him and his cousin, Charles Carroll Harper, to study at the Collège Stanislas in Paris. In 1821 he returned to Maryland and entered Harvard College in 1823, but was expelled with 37 others in the "Great Rebellion" and was not awarded his degree until 1855. He inherited both Homewood and Doughoregan Manor in 1832. He sold Homewood in 1839 and renovated Doughoregan, giving it a 300-foot long facade by connecting the main house to the chapel, kitchen, and other dependencies. In 1825, he married Mary Lee, granddaughter of Thomas Sim Lee, Governor of Maryland, and they had ten children, eight (listed) who survived infancy.
