Charles Carroll IV (1775-1825)

of "Homewood" Baltimore, Maryland

He was educated in France before returning to Maryland to manage the family estates. He designed Homewood on the land that was gifted to him by his father as a wedding present. However, Charles became an alcoholic and in 1816 his wife and children left him for a house in Philadelphia. His father bought back Homewood in 1824 in an attempt to put right his, "most improvident waste," but he died from alcohol the following year.
