Benjamin S. Welles (1857-1935)

Benjamin Sumner Welles, of 6 West 37th Street & Islip, New York

He was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and was a nephew of the Mrs Astor who included his name among "The Four Hundred". He was educated at Harvard and spent a year at Columbia Law School before travelling around Europe. On returning to New York he lived off his private income and belonged to the University Club, the Union Club, and the Harvard Club of New York. He was was a member of the Society of Colonial Wars and Treasurer of the Rest House. In 1886, he married Frances, daughter of Frederick George Swan and had two children. Their daughter married Henry A. Robbins and their son served in FDR's administration and married the heiress to the Townsend House in Washington D.C., living there and at Oxon Hill Manor, Maryland.
