Benjamin Sumner Welles (1823-1904)

Dry Goods Merchant, of 46 West 39th Street, New York City; and Islip, Long Island

He was born in Boston and was the nephew of Samuel Welles who founded the famous banking house of Welles & Co. in Paris. He was a patron and member of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the New York Botanical Gardens. He married Catherine, sister of the Mrs. Astor. He was survived by a son and three daughters.
