He was a graduate of Princeton University (1886) and a nephew of both J.P. Morgan and W.H. Osborn, President of the Illinois Central Railroad. He was a banker/broker in New York with Drexel & Morgan and then J.P. Morgan & Co., before setting up on his own account with an office at 31 Nassau Street. He was a member of the Union, New York Yacht, Turf & Field, the Brook, Racquet & Tennis, Republican, Players, Downtown, Rockaway Hunt, University, and New York Athletic clubs, and the Metropolitan Club of Washington. He lived in an apartment at the Plaza Hotel.
